CDs
Certificates of Deposit closely resemble a savings account. They are insured, virtually risk-free and offer a fixed rate of interest. The key characteristic that set it apart is the money held in a CD can not be withdrawn on demand (without penalty) until the CD matures.
Bonds
A bond is a type of debt instrument issued for a period of time with the goal of raising capital by borrowing. Many types of institutions such as the Federal, state, and local government as well as corporations sell bonds. A bond is a promise to repay the principal plus interest by a specified date. Bonds fall into a variety of categories based on tax status, credit quality, issuer type, maturity, and secured/unsecured.
Mutual Funds
Mutual funds are operated by an investment company to raise money from shareholders and invest in a group of assets according to a stated set of objectives. These raise money by selling shares of the fund to the public and use it to purchase a variety of investment vehicles such as stocks, bonds, and money market instruments. In return, shareholders receive an equity position in the fund.
Money Market Funds
Money market funds are open-ended mutual funds that invest in short-term instruments. These generally invest in low-risk securities which may offer an above average rate of interest when compared to conventional savings account. Money market funds bear certain restrictions such as minimum deposit requirements, limit on number of monthly transactions, and minimum account balance.
